I'm Limor Dekel
At age 15, Limor Dekel had to give up one passion for another. She chose the visual arts over dance. Her passions for the performing arts and travel are evident in her work.
She was born and raised in Israel to creative parents, surrounded by art and the inspiring forms of the landscape. She attended the Bat-Dor Academy of Dance for ten years.
After a two-year stint as an officer in the Israeli military, Limor studied ceramics design at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. A romantic adventure persuaded her to move to the US in 1984, where she opened a ceramic art studio in Crofton, MD, and sold her work to designers, galleries, and in numerous regional art and craft shows.
Her ceramics won several awards, and The Baltimore Sun and Crofton Crier wrote feature articles about her art. Limor continued to expand her creative pursuits and enrolled in the University of Maryland to receive a degree in Interior Design. She graduated in 1989 and began working for Marriott Hotels.
Limor also worked as a graphic designer and a freelance artist until, in 1998, she decided to become an art teacher. She enrolled in Towson State University and became a certified art teacher in 2002.
Limor discovered her love of painting during a class at Towson, and painting remains her current artistic focus. She teaches art to high school students in Montgomery County, MD. She is a member of Maryland State Education Association, National Art Education Association and Montgomery County Education Association.
Ms. Dekel has worked with the non-profit organization, Youth Art for Healing, mentoring high school art students to have their artwork installed in health-care facilities. Limor has exhibited her paintings at the Yellow Barn Gallery in Glen Echo, Baltimore-Washington International Airport and Towson Art Collective in Maryland.
My paintings express the energy and curiosity that I experience while creating them. I use color and texture to depict movement, energy and human expression, whether painting an abstract landscape, an intimate gesture, an intense musician, or a passionate dancer.
My paintings are representations of my mind’s visual journeys. Each painting contains past and present interpretations of my experiences.
I choose subjects that have personal meaning and depict not only what I see in front of me, but also incorporate past impressions, present mood, light and environment.
I use acrylic paint as it allows me to be spontaneous and expressive, and to feature vibrant colors and visible brush work. As with my former work as a ceramic artist, my paintings emphasize visual depth.
My daily work with art students inspires me to expand my themes and stay current with artistic and social trends as well as techniques.
I continue to explore a variety of media, venturing into watercolor and mixed media. Painting for me is an adventure: you never know where you’ll end up after you start, but the journey is both thrilling and rewarding.
