Growing up near the Mediterranean, I naturally got into windsurfing and sailing. My father built a small sailboat and owned a couple of other larger ones. I sailed along the coast of Israel, Greece and Turkey as well as the Caribbean Islands and the Chesapeake Bay. My favorite place on the boat is the bow (front of boat). When conditions permit, I like to hang my head off the edge and watch the front edge carving through the water, creating white waves on each side of the hull, similar to white horses leading a carriage.
However, this composition is not from the point of view I described above. It is from the viewpoint of someone in the water—as if the boat is about to run her over; a view that I got familiar with as a windsurfer. When I was still learning how to windsurf I spent a lot of time in the water after losing control of the sail. There have been scary situations when boat captains did not see me and came close to running me over. The view in my painting is what I saw.
